Start at the river. The falls that gave the city its name sit right beside downtown; a retaining wall built for a hydroelectric plant turned the old rapids into a waterfall. The River Walk follows both banks for about five miles.

From there it spreads out. Tautphaus Park holds the Idaho Falls Zoo, open since 1935, and Funland, a small amusement park from 1947 that the city bought and reopened in 2023. The Museum of Idaho downtown brings in traveling exhibits alongside Idaho history. In summer the Chukars play Pioneer League baseball at Melaleuca Field, and the War Bonnet Round Up rodeo, first held in 1911, fills the first weekend of August. In winter the Spud Kings play junior hockey at the Mountain America Center.
