Idaho Falls parks start at the river and spread through the neighborhoods. The River Walk runs about five miles along both banks of the Snake, and by the city's own count the loop around Freeman Park is about a mile. Freeman Park also has a sledding hill once the snow comes.

Tautphaus Park covers 84.5 acres, with the zoo, Funland, ball fields, a skate park and an ice arena. Smaller neighborhood parks such as Kate Curley in the Numbered Streets are scattered across town, and Gem Lake south of the city has a marina and a bike park.

Past the edge of town the country turns to lava and sagebrush. Hell's Half Acre, a lava field about 25 miles west, has marked trails near where I-15 crosses its corner.
